Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from Karmic Koala.

The version of Udev I'm running is 151-12. (I'm not entirely sure udev is the correct package but after reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage, it seams like the most likely candidate.)

When using Karmic Koala whenever I plugged in my 512MB ipod shuffle ubuntu readily detected and mounted it and I was able to easily use it with Rhythmbox, transferring music to and from the ipod. I could also easily transfer files to and from the ipod using nautilus.

After upgrading to 10.04 this no longer happens. The ipod never gets mounted. I can see it when I run Disk Utility, which identifies it as an Apple Ipod, but has no options to mount it. All my other usb storage devices work flawlessly on 10.04.

I know of several others who are experiencing the same problem as I first posted to the forums (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9272323#post9272323 ) looking for help, but almost all replies I received were other people experiencing the same problem.

Regards,

John Curwood

This worked for me. I followed the reset instructions with my iPod plugged in. The screen dimmed, displayed a do not disconnect message, and within thirty seconds the system recognized and mounted the device, asking me what application to associate it with. Music was not lost.

Thanks for the idea Gaea, however the instructions for the ipod shuffle didn't have any effect. Does anyone know if there is a way to revert to an earlier version of udev so I can alter the playlist on my ipod? It mounted fine under Karmic Koala and earlier and only stopped when I upgraded the OS to Lucid Lynx. It's now been 2 months since I have been able to change the playlist on my ipod and I would REALLY like to get some new songs on there to listen to.

There's an ugly workaround for me. Due to some M$-Software, I have to use Virtual Box. I can mount the iPod 1st gen. within the boxed M$-Windows.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) we have a new tool to debug storage related problems. Please run "ubuntu-bug", select "storage problem", and walk through the steps. This will create a new bug report, please send the new bug number here, so that I get to know it quickly.

Thank you!

Thanks for the Apport data. The udev monitor shows that there is no event for the actual partition (/dev/sdf1), just one for the drive (/dev/sdf). I'm going to make bug 621605 a duplicate, to keep this one (which has more decription) the main one.

Can you please remove the ipod, then do

 udevadm monitor --kernel --property

then plug it in, let it settle, and copy&paste the entire ouput? (Note, you might need to scroll back). Thanks!

Ah, thanks. So this is a kernel bug in the end, it doesn't create a block device for /dev/sdf1 (the actual data partition). Reassigning.

John Curwood, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
