Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release: 10.04

My computer: EeePC 901

My wireless card: RaLink - rt2860 (rt2860sta)

Expect to happen: Successfully connect and stay connected to a WPA/WPA2 wireless network.

What happens: When the computer first turns on and my wireless is set to AUTO Connect, it will connect and stay connected for about 1-2 minutes before reporting: "<network-name> Disconnected". After that, every time I try to connect it asks for the passkey, which I input, it then has the icon of the wireless trying to connect in the tool bar, it tries to connect for a few minutes until it asks for the passkey again, and it goes in an endless loop like that.

ATTACHED: dmesg from first trying to connect to a WPA2 network until it asked for the WPA2 key again.

ditto.
The dmsg log matches.
Of all the rta2860sta module related bugs yours matches the behavior I see.

Philippe (philippepiatkiewitz) wrote :

I have a different issue, but related to this driver:

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Medion Akoya E1210 which has a Ralink 2860.
I have an Apple Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule who together create a single wireless network. The Airport is connected to the internet and also runs as a DHCP server, the Time Capsule only extends the range of the network.

After a fresh boot wireless always connects to my network. After a resume from suspend however, it connects only to the wireless network if I am close to the Timecapsule. If I am close to the Airport it will not connect.

I tried the Proprietary driver from Ralink and that seems to connect under all circumstances, unfortunately it crashes the kernel after a few minutes, so that makes this pretty useless.

Ubuntu 10.04 worked fine with the older (january 2010) Ralink proprietary driver installed.

Sorry, I figured out what the problem was after I read all th posts.

I deleted /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat (which was created by installing the proprietary driver) and then the default Ubuntu driver worked in all cases.
I maybe should have done a "make uninstall" when I decided to revert to the Ubuntu driver

Philippe (philippepiatkiewitz) wrote :

Well, actually I still have problems...

I am still using the default Ubuntu 10.10 driver (currently I am on kernel 2.6.35-22.35).
When I boot under battery power only, WLAN connects as expected, but when I suspend an wake the system up after a few minutes it will not connect again. I tried disabling networking and enabling it again, but this does not help.

The REALLY WEIRD thing is that when I attach the power supply everything works as expected all the time! (This is what threw me off in my previous posts).

Fiepel, the WLAN not reconnecting on wake up is another known bug (most likely #661206)

The orinal submited bug is a real one involving the rt2860 driver.
With Ubuntu 9.10 kernels, no problem.
With Ubuntu 10.04 kernel, you'll have to reinstall rt2860 driver as described here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1476007
With Ubuntu 10.10, the driver for rt2860 cards is different (if you're an advanced user, you'll notice some strange values, and the iface name has changed) but it is working.

I have this problem only for mixed WPA/WPA2 connections

Edward McKnight, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I am currently unable to test if the bug still exists on the latest Ubuntu release, however if no attempt was made to fix the bug I think it would be correct to assume that the bug is still present until it is tested.
