Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have a recurring problem on Lucid - reproducible two different computers.

I lock my screen or/and leave my computer unattended. The screen goes black or displays "Out of range" and does not come back to the desktop, or to the password prompt when I move my mouse or type on the keyboard. I still have ssh access to the box.

These computers are not are set to suspend, and even if they were to suspend I would not be able to access them through ssh. I believe this is an issue with gnome-screensaver, gnome-power-manager or xorg.

I believe this is affecting me too. When the screen saver comes on and has been on for a while (overnight in this case) mouse movements and keyboard do not bring up unlock screen. I do see mouse move on screen. I was able to SSH in and killall gnome-screensaver and then I could get back in.

gnome-screensaver then restarted and top showed 2 processes both with 98-99% of cup. Had to reboot.

98-99% of CPU is what I meant. Also I am running 10.04 x64 on a ThinkPad T60 w/4 gig of ram but only 3 is showing.

Hi PaulK1966,
Thank you for confirming my bug. Your description of the symptoms you experienced parallel mine, so I will mark the bug as confirmed. This has happened to me once again today. As this computer did not have an active ssh server, I was not able to log into it remotely and turn it off. I had to force a reboot. As I was in the middle of a session, all unsaved data was lost and fsck took ~10 minutes to correct issues on the 8GB disk at boot. I was inconvenienced and unable to access my computer when I needed it the most. The risk of data loss and possible filesystem corruption from an untended computer is quite unfortunate and seems serious enough. However I find it odd that there are not more reports of this occurring.
