Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

The System Freezes when before switching from Boot splash to X-Server.
I can hear the Startup-Sound but I have no Mouse-pointer Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-Del don't work.
My System runs Ubuntu 10.4 standard installation with all Updates before March 22.
Graphics Card is a Gainward GeForce 3 TI 200 (NV20) with 128 Mb RAM.
Changing the Graphics Card solves the Problem.

Hi Jacek,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Hmm
I can't open a shell to get the lspci output.
I tried the Recovery Mode in the GRUB menu. I ended up with a Cursor in the left upper corner.
The Recovery-Mode works with my other Graphics-Card (Geforce 6200).
Perhaps this bug is Kernel related after all.

Can you please boot the system in a way it fails, then restart it in safe graphics mode and run apport-collect 544088 to attach the logs? That way it will include the old logs with the failure in it so we can try to troubleshoot it more.

After the latest updates I can boot to Recovery Menu.
How can I start the safe graphics mode? I Can't find it nowhere.
I tried to run apport-collect 544088 in text-mode root-shell but I can't login to launchpad in w3m.
The continue Button is not selectable, only cancel. Perhaps it needs Javascript.

Exact same problem with a GeForce3 Ti 500. Cannot get past boot splash with nouveau driver. Works with nvidia-96 installed via jockey-text.

@Jacek, when you enter recovery mode and get the list of options do not choose to continue with normal boot. I think that is why you get the blinking cursor (same for me). Instead select root shell or root shell + networking.

It would be useful to know if nouveau boots your system with acceleration disabled. Could you please try booting adding the “nouveau.noaccel=1” option to your boot line? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Nouveau#Disable%20acceleration has details if you're unsure how to do this.

Boot successful when adding "nouveau.noaccel=1" manually to boot line in grub. The splash image flashes for a second, but screen is mostly black before gdm loads. I can then log in and use desktop with no apparent problems.

There's a shiny new test kernel available in the xorg-edgers/nouveau PPA, here: http://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/nouveau

It contains a quirk to disable acceleration for your cards. Could you please install this kernel, and check that you can successfully boot without any additional kernel options? Thanks.

I installed the Kernel from the nouveau PPA.
X starts now. I got no boot-splash but I assume that's ok.

Thank You!

@opti545, not sure why you're posting that here. It seems to have nothing at all to do with this bug. You are using neither the nouveau driver, nor the hardware in question, nor experiencing the symptoms being discussed.

Try posing you message on bug #510390 or bug #552653, which seem to pertain to the error message you're getting.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-lucid' to 'verification-done-lucid'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
