Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnokii

Seen with Lucid's version of gnokii-cli/0.6.28.dfsg-1

This is reported in debian bug #563317, and fix released in gnokii/0.6.28.dfsg-2

postrm will fail because "groupdel gnokii" comes before "dpkg-statoverride --remove"

TEST CASE:
1. apt-get install gnokii-cli
2. apt-get remove --purge gnokii-cli
3. apt-get install gnokii-cli

VERIFICATION DONE:
. The package is removed cleanly and you can reinstall it

status: Unknown → Fix Released

After purge of gnokii (completely remove in synaptic), apparently gnokii is removed as group, causing problems with dpkg/apt

Backup of /etc/group and renaming of /etc/group~ to /etc/group solves the problem

Message when running apt-get:
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown group 'gnokii' in statoverride file

as mentioned in the debian report this fixed it for me:
sudo groupadd gnokii
dpkg-statoverride --remove /usr/sbin/mgnokiidev
groupdel gnokii

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Maverick Meerkat.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

Nominating for SRU in Lucid:
- Removal of gnokii-cli leaves dpkg in a broken state and unusable. (See also http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=563307 dpkg-statoverride fails if wrong group in /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride )

- Regression: None. The user is removed after the call to dpkg-statoverride rather than before.

Accepted gnokii into lucid-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

SRU verification for Lucid:
I have reproduced the problem with gnokii-cli 0.6.28.dfsg-1 in lucid and have verified that the version of gnokii-cli 0.6.28.dfsg-1ubuntu0.1 in -proposed fixes the issue.

Marking as verification-done
