[i855gm] Xorg freezes after short time when stressed

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Affected system: Maxdata Pro 600i
Graphic Chip: Intel 855GM

Behaviour: System gets locally inresponsitive after a short time when Xorg started. Mouse cursor is still moveable, but system doesn't react on mouse click, keyboard clicks or even Ctrl-Alt F2 for console. However, system is fully available using openssh-server.

System had been upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, but bug also exists when using Karmic Live-CD.

'Freeze' can easily be reproduced by stressing the graphics subsystem (i.e. moving a window fast over the desktop).

I've tried to disable KMS by booting the kernel with option nomodset. Same behaviour.

Very close to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/477972

I've tried several of the possibilities Geir meantioned on this post (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/477972/comments/5).

Xorg.conf finally looked this way, but the system still freezes.
root@seal:/etc/X11# diff xorg.conf xorg.conf-karmic-orig

Setting acpi=off as kernel parameter helps! System has now been stable for more than 10 minutes. (but anyway, the system fan is now driving me bananas.)

Daniel, at bug 447892 we have identified the commit to the kernel that triggered the freezes for many people on 855GM chipsets. Could you also test the before (599) and after (600) kernels to check if this is the bad commit for you as well? See comment #59 at bug 447892 for details.

Dear Geir,

following the URL you posted in bug 447892 (http://www.kvante.info/855GMfreeze/) I get an HTTP error 403 Forbidden. Is there an other place to get the kernels?

Sorry about that! I was supposed to copy the .htaccess file to another
directory (for another bug) and ended up moving it instead. It's fixed
now.

Thank you for the noPAE versions of the kernels and all the tests and bug solving.

600 crashed after short time
599 was tested for ca. 30 minutes without crash (did some window movement, glxgears, played videos and solitaire)

So this one seems to work pretty stable on Maxdata Pro 600i
 linux-headers-2.6.31.1-855gmtest599-git522bb74_gomyhr2nopae_i386.deb

How will I get noticed when this is fixed in mainstream kernels?

[This comment goes to freeze bugs on intel 855GM]

At bug 456902 (similar freezes on 845G) there is currently an effort to find where xserver-xorg-video-intel and/or libdrm changed and so that the freezes were triggered. Brian Rogers has a PPA that he is updating libdrm and -intel until they catch a version which freezes (they first found that a standard Karmic kernel with Jaunty libdrm and -intel did not freeze). It is possible that the same is true for 855GM and this is a chance to catch a free ride from the 845G testing effort. In order to test, use the standard Karmic kernel and add Brian's PPA: https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-testing . See the bug 456902 comment #29 and after for more details.

Apologies if someone already reported that Jaunty with Karmic kernel also freezes. In that case, testing older -intel and libdrm in Karmic is probably pointless. I'm loosing the overview as there are many similar bug reports on 845G, 855GM and 945G/945GM, and I forget exactly what is already tested for each chipset.

PS: Dan, you can follow these two upstream bug reports which will probably be closed when this is fixed:

Using Rogers PPA xorg server 5:2.8.0-2-gb0aa94f and the actual main kernel 2.6.31-16-generic did not solve the problem. Xorg was freezing at GDM login prompt.

I've tried Lucid Beta 1 which provides xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-1ubuntu13. Same is still happening, though X.org now seems to detect the crash and starts itself with vga16fg to have control of the system.

Do I need to file a new bug for Lucid, or do you want to tag this bug accordingly?

It is probably best if you file a new bug for Lucid, since things may have changed and we then don't need to separate the Karmic history from the Lucid problem. It is likely that you have bug 541511, though. Remember to update your system before filing a bug (we're now at 2:2.9.1-1ubuntu17 or so).
