Bug Description

directly after upgrade from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 indicator-applet shows up evolution, empathy and pidgin and everything works.
after starting empathy from applet, pidgin disappears from indicator-applet.
then update-manager tells me that there are updates for empathy and some other updates so i let him install them.
after updating, empathy doesn't show up in indicator-applet. only evolution ist left in the applet.
when i start empathy from menu, the green dot shows in panel and beside my name, so i get two green dots, but nothing in indicator-applet.
i've completely removed empathy and installed it from synaptic, but nothing changed.
so indicator-applet is useless for me, because i don't use evolution.

I've got the same problem. I added Telepathy repository and updated Empathy and now it doesn't show in indicator applet, but it shows its green dot icon and I can switch my status using FUSA. I suppose indicator applet looks for specific version of empathy installed. Still it's weird, because FUSA works the same as it did before.

OK. I have to correct myself. It's not FUSA, it's indicator-applet-session.

This isn't actually a bug, you have empathy installed from the telepathy ppa which isn't patched to utilize the indicator-applet.

Changed in indicator-applet:
status: New → Invalid

is there a chance to get a patch for indicator-applet in the next time?

Not in the telepathy ppa, that is the upstream ppa. The indicator patch is for ubuntu.

Sure, let me explain. The version of empathy in the ubuntu karmic repository includes a distro patch, making empathy take advantage of the messaging indicator. That feature isn't in the upstream (empathy developers) version, which is the version in the telepathy ppa. The telepathy ppa is a repository for packages provided by the upstream developers, not affiliated with Ubuntu as a distro. Ubuntu patches empathy to provide the user experience consistency within the Ubuntu desktop. If you have enabled the telepathy ppa, I assume you are testing empathy or one of the telepathy packages. We certainly encourage that, but the user experience won't be the same, it will be that of the upstream package (which isn't bad by no means).

Changed in indicator-applet:
assignee: nobody → Telepathy (telepathy)
assignee: Telepathy (telepathy) → nobody

why can't this patch be made into a package or a plugin? that way new releases of empathy will continue to work in the indicator applet? This is one of the reasons that people find the indicator applet to be a bad idea.
