Bug Description

Upgraded from 32 bit jaunty to 32 bit Karmic. Dvd movies used to play fine with Totem in Jaunty, now they fail to play and Totem grays out and becomes unresponsive. I have to force quit it. I can play dvd movies successfully with vlc, which I have made the default dvd movie player for now.

Other then dvd movies, totem also fails to play audio cd's and gives the message:
An error occurred
Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.

Totem will play all the media files that are saved to my hard drive, just nothing from optical discs.

If I select rhythmbox to play audio cd's, it works as expected.

I have another machine that is a clean 32 bit install of Karmic and it exhibits the same behavior.
Ubuntu-restricted-extras and medibuntu w32codecs and libdvdcss2 are all installed.

Sebastien, this is not a duplicate of #469603, as I explained earlier on IRC.

<ubot4> Launchpad bug 466389 in gstreamer0.10 "totem hangs when try to play DVD" [Low,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/466389
<MagicFab> seb128, hanging is different
<seb128> MagicFab, what about the first one?
<MagicFab> seb128, and the first one would be a dup - I searched, couldn't find someting with enough resemblance to my issue
<MagicFab> tx
<seb128> you're welcome
<MagicFab> mine is a clean install so no, not a dup.
<seb128> short story, dvd playing is known to be broken
<seb128> we have a zillion on similar looking bugs
<seb128> but nobody is working on dvd playing
<seb128> especially not on libdvdcss, etc issue
<seb128> since those can't be legaly distributed or be part of the install anyway
<MagicFab> seb128, agreed, so Totem should at least fail completely/gracefully instead of locking up or proposing codecs that won't fix the issue.
<seb128> right

I have since done a clean install of karmic 64 bit and it also exhibits the same problems as the Original Post.

So this bug affects:
1) upgrades of 32 bit 9.04 to 32 bit 9.10
2) clean installs of 32 bit 9.10
3) clean installs of 64 bit 9.10

The latest gstreamer updates applied today which have a patch to fix sub titles in Totem did not have any effect on this bug. Totem still grays out and refuses to play DVD's. If I open the video_TS folder on the DVD, I can use Totem to play all the vob files without problems.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GStreamer is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.
