Ubuntu One does not synchronize

Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

The folders that I have placed into the Ubuntu One folder are reflected on the web, but none of the contents of those folders are uploaded. Additionally, despite sucessfully connecting with Tomboy notes, it reports failure to synchronize and has an arrow to click on to show errors, but this is blank.

Hi James,

I'm sorry to hear Ubuntu One isn't working properly for you. In order for us to figure out what is causing this problem, can you attach ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log to this bug report? Note that attaching syncdaemon.log will show filenames you are attempting to sync with Ubuntu One. If you do not want this to be public, please mark the bug as private and this bug report will only be available to you and the Ubuntu One team.

As for the Tomboy problem, can you report a new bug here: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers/+filebug When reporting the Tomboy sync issue, please make sure you have all the latest updates and then try running Tomboy from a terminal session using this command: tomboy --debug > tomboy_debug.log

Once you run that command, try to sync and then attach the file from the command above.

Thank you,

Joshua

Thanks for the advice, but it still does not synchronize.

Using marcello100 advice, the problem is partially solved. However, Ubuntu One only synchronizes some files, but not all of them. Even worse, it marks all the files as synchronized in the local folder. This is a VERY dangerous behavior, as people will normally assume all the files are synchronized, but thats not the case. In my case, in one folder it only synchronized one out of 33 files, and in other folder it only synced one out of 7 sub-folders. This is serious, is a shame, but I can not trust my files to this service.
I reattach the syncdaemon.log file, in case it was modified.

I payed for 50 gigs, but I can't even upload to the free limit.

After 3 days, somehow, Ubuntu One started to synchronize the remaining files. Apparentely all files are synced now. However, I am not sure if the problem is solved. It may be a random problem, and if this is the case it is equally serious. Once more, I reattach syncdaemon.log, as it may help.

Ubuntu one isn't working at all. I formated the computer than i could see some files in that exact same computer when i logged in but not on the other one. But it was just a empty folder and a zip i was not allowed to open. I don't want to study to become a rocket sientist so i can use Ubuntu one. rather wait till lynx and check if it works there.

I'm afraid that I have the same problem. Only a few of the files are synchronized. I have the same problem a couple of months now and I quit. Now I see that more people are coming with the same issue, so I report it.
I noticed that when I upload new files from the work computer (Karmic) I don't see any change to the web page. When I go home and I use my home computer (Karmic), U1 starts synchronization and some of the new files appear on the web site!!!
In any case U1 is not dependable. It's impossible to be sure if you have the new version of the file you need to work.

I have the same problem. Something I DID notice though, was that the problem only occurs for me when I'm using my Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 netbook. When I use my main laptop, which is running 9.04 Jaunty, things work perfectly. To recreate this problem on Karmic, make a few folders locally, and copy and paste them into Ubuntu One.

___
Okay, as I was writing this, I was uploading a text file from my 9.04 to Ubuntu One into a folder. It was called 'harsh'. but the uploaded version is called harsh.u1conflict and is not visible from my 9.10 netbook.

And at the same time, my 9.10 finally did sync files, BUT only the files that were sent to the root Ubuntu One folder. Anything that was sent to a subfolder, or any subfolders that were sent, did not sync (aside from the empty folder itself).

I have a bunch of xx.u1conflict folders in my root - where xx are the names of the failed files.

I will attach the requested docs as well. They include everything mentioned above, which are my last actions.

this sucks bigtime i would rather use ubuntu one than the "drop box", but i have no choice. sometimes my files are there and sometimes theyre not. my files dont even show that theyre syncing and dont have the little green check on them to show theyre a synced file or folder. another thing thats annoying me is that i watched some youtube videos to see whats not working on my U1 app & i noticed that when they add a file or folder a little box at the upper right corner shows stating that its updating, im not getting that showing nor is the files showing there little green checks. i have lucid (10.04) and it came preinstalled, but im about to uninstall U1 and reinstall to see if itll fix. i cant do it from the software center because it says that there isnt a version for "amd64" or that its not compatible. so i really dont know what to do here, all i can do is hope that on the release itll be working the way that it should. if not then im just gonna get dropbox. if anyone has any way to fix this please email me how u did it thanks!

Unfortunately, the Lucid version of Ubuntu One no longer has the notifications nor the applet that changes. So the youtube videos are probably outdated. If you have already uninstalled it, you can reinstall it with Synaptic Package Manager or Software Center, it's easy to find as "Ubuntu One" in the search box. I have amd64 and didn't have any problems installing it.

As far as the sync issues you are experienced, we are tracking these issues down and will have them resolved soon.

I fully updated my Lucid install on Friday (Apr 28) and left the machine up all weekend, hoping it would eventually sync. Still only getting folders, no contents.

I tried creating a folder and text file to see if NEW stuff would sync, and only the folder shows on the web interface. The file is listed as 'uploading.'

I'm re-downloading Lucid and will try a reinstall (again).

I uploaded one simple file two days ago in my home desktop (10.04 amd64) and in can not see this simple file in any of the other two pc.
I apologize if my comments seem very hard, but it has never worked consistently for me. Neither the 9.10 nor now with 10.04. I think that in this service, there is much room for improvement. Unreliable leave your documents, notes or contacts in a cloud that does not work most of the time.

Andre (ajx) wrote :

Droping some files into a subfolder of "Ubuntu One" may or may not upload them to the cloud. On another machine files in the cloud may or may not be downloaded. So far I couldn't figure out a causal reason affecting this behaviour. This makes U1 highly unrelyable. Furthermore restarting the sync-daemon via
u1sdtool -q
u2sdtool -c
produces .conflict files and folders. For testing purposes I'm not using more than 10 files at once.

Hello,

It's the same for me. It's look like not starting synchronize files, just folders after a long time. Don't download new files from web. Tomboy does not work too. It's the same with contacts.

This since ubuntu 10.04, with ubuntu 9.10 it was good, what is the difference?

Not sure if this gives you any extra clues, but I saw one of my files with a synchronisation icon a few minutes ago. It's now displayed as updated again, but the file hasn't been updated at all.

If this is going to remain a problem, I would look into providing a backup feature of forcing synchronisation of manual files. Whatever happens, something needs to be done because Ubuntu is making a big thing of this unique feature, and for it to fail to work in a LTS release does not look good.

Roman, why is this the same bug report as bug #462828?
Here it's about files being marked as synced but in reality no syncing has taken place. See eg. the entry 20 by Peter Schallenberg one year ago:
"Got similar problem.
On all 4 computers I use files will have green checkboxes as indication they will by uploaded, but when I check the server via the website I mis files. On all 4 computers I now have different files.

I have the exact same problem. In one folder some files will be synced while others will not be synced - even though they are all marked as being synced. This is the most secure way to lose data....

Philippe,

The original bug report was filed against the outdated version of the client which was specifically prohibited from accessing the server-side due to that bug in the client.

The bug report then got a number of other comments that may not have been related to the original issue.
I am removing the duplicate status.

I've got the same problem but only by 6 months, before that ubuntuone synced perfectly.

My system: Ubuntu 10.04; kernel 2.6.32-33-generic #72; gnome 2.30.2
Computer now working in: Pentium M 1,73 Ghz; RAM 1gb

In two computers I've installed COUNCH-DB for sync bookmarks etc (then I've uninstalled it).. in the last one I've done only the normal upgrades. Today all computers can't connect and sync with ubuntuone.
I've executed these classic commands avaliable in a lot of forums:
1. Quit the Ubuntu One client
2. Open Applications->Accessories->Passwords and Encryption Keys
3. Click on the arrow next to "Passwords"
4. Right-click on the Ubuntu One token and select "Delete"
5. Go to https://one.ubuntu.com/account/machines/
6. Click on the checkbox next to your computer
7. Click the "Remove selected computers" button
8. killall ubuntu-sso-login; u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c
NOTE: (For Lucid): u1sdtool -q; killall ubuntuone-login; u1sdtool -c
9. a web page should open, prompting you to add your computer to
your Ubuntu One account
10. Add your computer

... but nothing. None "web page opened" and none window ask me to "add my computer". I attach my syncdaemon.log.
Finaly: ubuntuone files status seems to be ok (site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/Status)

What happened?

Thanks

You need to know that the note incriminated by tomboy log does'nt exist on Ubuntu One according to web site. It only flashes (appears then disappears) in my local notes when synchronizing.

Same problem here, on both my netbook and my desktop computer.

Every time I select a folder and have it synced with Ubuntu One, the green check mark instantly appears and none of the contents are uploaded. Ubuntu One reports that everything is in sync. The empty folder becomes available on-line and to other computers but no contents appear, even if I leave it for days. The only way to get the files to sync is to kill the ubuntuone-syncdaemon and restart it through the gtk control panel.

So every time I want to sync a folder (this is consistent), I have to go through this exact process:

1) Sync the folder in nautilus
2) In terminal enter "killall ubuntuone-syndaemon"
3) Start ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk
4) Click "Start" to start syncing.

Restarting the computer works too (but suspending or hibernating then resuming). Restarting nautilus does not affect anything.

Hello,

This bug was originally reported a couple of years ago. A lot of things have changed since, and the problems that you are experiencing are probably different; so it's a little hard to debug when this happens. It would be a lot easier for us if you give us a hand here (pretty please :)

To the original reporter James Forestier, are you still experiencing the same problem? I'm going to mark this bug as Incomplete, waiting for your answer.

To the rest of you still having problems, please do the following to report a new bug with logs:

1. Open Applications->Accessories->Terminal and run: echo -e "[logging]\nlevel = DEBUG" > ~/.config/ubuntuone/logging.conf; u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c
2. Try to reproduce the synchronization problem.
3. On the terminal, run: ubuntu-bug ubuntuone-client
4. Attach ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log and ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon-exception.log to the bug report.

Note that attaching syncdaemon.log will show filenames you are attempting to sync with Ubuntu One. If you do not want this to be public, please mark the bug as private and this bug report will only be available to you and the Ubuntu One team.
