Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I try to save my documents as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc,) and after asking me if I would like to save it as .odt, the Writer crashes and the document is then correctly recovered, although it keeps crashing and the only way to save it is as an .odt document.

I'm using Ubuntu karmic (development brunch) version 9.10.

Do you have a document in odt format that as soon as you try to save it as doc it causes the crash? If so can you please attach an example document showing this issue?

Hi! Yes, I have an example. Here it goes!

Thank you for your feedback. Maybe it's a problem that can easily be solved. I hope so...

Just a thing: I've tried to modify and the save documents originally created with Word and everything is OK. I thought that the problem may had something to do with the fact that I've used these notes, but I have created a new document and could save it as Word, and after introducing a note I could save it normally...

Therefore, the problem won't apply to every document saved as word, but it has already happened to me a few times.

Thank you for your feedback!

Hello.

I can confirm this problem in ubuntu 9.10 RC. This happens when I try to save a .doc file from a .odt file, or when I save changes to a .doc file.

Works fine for me with the current version in Karmic (1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1) does it work for you with that version?

Does moving/removing the ~/.openoffice.org* directories help resolve the problem?

My problem is with Karmic released. I downloaded it like 3 days ago.
What I did was to save a file with a certain amount of center rules on a text block to make the first page and then used bullets. This document is a template I used to use, the version of Oo I used in Jaunty was perfect. This one creates gibberish when saving in docx and Word 2003 xml.
If I save the box or the bullets it does'nt crash only toghether.
Thank's.

I have the same problem on Karmic with OOo 3.1.1. An old box on the LAN here running Gutsy with OOo 2.3 can do the job for me.

This is important for me since I often get .doc files to comment on from MS Office users. I can not attach an example file, since they are supposed to be non-public, but is there any other information I can provide to help solve the problem?

I have this problem as well. I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 Karmic. The problem began after the upgrade.

Writer will also not save notes which are placed in a doc file. Only .odt.

naphta, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
