Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Running karmic with all recent updates at the moment. I often (mostly after startup) get a strange black bar in the notification area. Could be a placeholder for another app but I wouldn't know which one. I'll post a screenshot that shows what I mean.

Btw, I think this is due to empathy, so it might be related to bug 290471.

I've noticed this too. This appears as update-notifier loads and does its stuff, and appears to be triggered by u-n

Isn't it triggered by notify-osd? Sorry, I'm not a dev, but I was wondering if we shouldn't file it against notify-osd.

E.g. the black bar always appears when I open empathy and I get the message "You are now logged in as....", which has nothing to do with updates but rather with notifications.

notify-osd doesn't do anything with the notification area. update-notifier does. I see this every time i log in after one minute, when update-notifier starts

I suppose you could be experiencing an issue with empathy too though, but i don't think it's anything to do with notify-osd

I have the black bar and I don't even have update-notifier running. I do get the black bar exactly at the point where empathy starts and there is a notification bubble saying that I am now logged in to IRC chat.

I marked this as also affects empathy, I suspect it is the indicator patch to empathy. I will try to reproduce it with update-notifier just to make sure.

I don't think this is actually affecting update-notifier, it was an empathy bug.

This bug was fixed in the package empathy - 2.28.0.1-1ubuntu6

---------------
empathy (2.28.0.1-1ubuntu6) karmic; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/20_libindicate.patch
    - display the status icon when the indicator isn't present (LP: #435329)
    - don't attach notifications to the status icon if the icon
      isn't visible, it was drawing a black line (LP: #434316)
  * debian/patches/30_raise_not_toggle.patch
    - Updated to apply cleanly

This bug hasn't been fixed for me, on an up to date Ubuntu 10.04.

It is not an Empathy bug. Maybe Empathy was triggering the bug, but I do not have Empathy installed on my system, and I still have this bug happening. The only thing I have running in the Notification Area is the NetworkManager Applet.

The black line appears at seemingly random times. Often it just flickers a bit, appearing and disappearing right after. But right now I'm looking at it just standing there. It doesn't disappear if I move the Notification Area or click on the NetworkManager Applet or anything, although it will probably be gone again if I reboot.

@Geert, could you please type 'apt-cache policy empathy' and 'uname -a' and paste that information here. Also a screenshot of whats happening to you (when it happens) would be good.

I can't reproduce the bug right now, because it happens randomly for me. But it looks exactly like the screenshot that's attached to this bug report: it's a 1 pixel vertical black line that appears next to an icon in the system tray.

Here's the information:

geertjan@geertjan-desktop:~$ apt-cache policy empathy

The bug is still there in lucid: the black bar shows up for a split second right after boot. But disappears right away, so it's not such a big problem.
