Bug Description

Hey! as bug #171271 (sf1485493) now is about printing margins only, I want to request "normal" margins as well as bleed. Margins are used to mark the content area of a poster, bleed is the 3mm around a page that you make your document bigger so that there are no white stripes left, after the printshop cut it to the right format.

Margins are really simple. Basically they are just four guides, that have a certain distance form the page edge. They just guide the designer in where to place the main content. The thing is that they are so important for proper layout, that this should be a document property and not have to be set manually with 4 guides.

Bleed is a bit more complicated, if done well. Basically it also is just a guiding rectangle outside of the page. However, it would be nice to be able to export the page including and excluding the bleed. It would also be nice to be able to toggle to see everything outside the bleed area or not to (just as it would be nice to toggle hiding everything outside of the page)

Come on, make this great tool even better :-)

Can you compare your requested features with the new 'Printing Marks' extension (Inkscape 0.47pre2)?

Hey suv, thanks for all the research and the quick response!

So, I opened this report, because it's no longer a dupe of #171271. It is a dupe of #170962, actually, which I also reported, but didn't find when looking for reports related to margins.

As for comparing it with the printer marks feature: crop (printing) marks are for the printshop to tell, where to cut, they are not for the designer in the layouting process. so the crop marks are just there additionally, not actually helping the designer.

So please don't make this a dupe of #171271 but make #170962 a dupe of this.
@Pablo: leave the report #171271 for printing margins only. The original poster wanted the same feature as me, but for a different purpose. I think that it is the best to leave it only for printing margins… Though I'm not sure, if that isn't best handled by the print driver… it's not my workflow as I usually send things to a print shop, so I don't think I can really talk about it.

Did you try the extension? It allows to add crop marks, bleed marks,
registration marks etc.

Changed the duplicate status according to comment #3.

Forget my last comment (#4) - I misunderstood your comparison with the 'Printing Marks' extension. Regarding tools helping the designer and picking up on the 'guideline toolbox' from a comment to your original report: did you take a look at newer versions of the 'Guides Creator' <http://code.google.com/p/inkscape-guides-creator/>?

From the Roadmap <http://code.google.com/p/inkscape-guides-creator/wiki/Roadmap>:

Futures versions
° […]
° changing GC to a Guides Manager extension (calling for all ideas about guides manipulation)

Margins/frames useful in the design workflow (≠ printing):

these tools are available in 0.47
1) page frame: snap to page (new in 0.47)
2) bleed frame: set bleed marks with 'Printing Marks' extension, convert the bleed marks to guides
3) margin frame (for content): presets for guide lines are available with the extension 'Guides creator…', the latest version from <http://code.google.com/p/inkscape-guides-creator/> includes margin presets

missing:
1) toggle preview/export frame contents only (for page and bleed)
2) comprehensive integrated guides manager

Ideally, I would like to see margin and bleed ideas implemented as part of my blueprint. Having dynamic margins that update automatically when changing page dimensions might be handy.
