Bug Description

Binary package hint: bzr

The Bazaar team would like Ubuntu to upgrade bzr in Karmic from 1.18 to 2.0.0. We're now in deep code freeze on 2.0.0rc2 and shipping either 2.0.0rc2 or 2.0.0 would be fine, depending on when you get to it. We don't expect to request any further changes before Karmic ships.

The main reasons are:

 * 2.0.0 is a good foundation for support over the life of the karmic release, as we will keep merging bugfixes (only) to this branch and making 2.0.x releases at least until Karmic+1. Those releases are intended to be suitable for karmic-updates. (See http://doc.bazaar-vcs.org/bzr.dev/developers/cycle.html)

 * 2.0rc2 fixes some fairly important bugs present in 1.18, including bug 415508, bug 423818, bug 402652, bug 423506, bug 416732.

 * 2.0rc2 uses the 2a format as the default and we want to standardize on that format for this point on, including for Ubuntu development.

Upgrading bzr may/will require upgrading some packages that provide bzr plugins, including especially bzr-git/hg/svn and bzrtools. I think updated versions of these packages are now available.

2.0 is packaged in our ppa <https://edge.launchpad.net/~bzr-beta-ppa/+archive/> and has been tested.

Here's the sections of NEWS describing changes since 1.18. You can see the commit log under https://code.launchpad.net/bzr

https://edge.launchpad.net/~bzr-beta-ppa/+archive/ppa currently has bzr-svn 0.6.3, and karmic has 0.6.4-1ubuntu1. There is an upcoming 1.0.0 <https://launchpad.net/bzr-svn/+milestone/1.0.0> that makes it compatible with bzr 2.0.

It seems to me that bzr-svn is the only remaining problematic dependant package: bzr-git and the various guis do not conflict with bzr 2.0rc2, and bzr-hg is not packaged yet.

See also bug 425507, asking for bzr-explorer to be included; that's not a dependency for updating bzr though.

Added ubuntu-release since bzr is Main. I think it's premature to consider this until all th rdepends are available.

I reviewed NEWS, and I welcome the upgrade to Karmic. However, I agree to Scott that bzr-svn should be available in a compatible version first before we upgrade bzr.

There's a bzr-svn in experimental that we will use. It is compatible with
2.0.0 and intends to be releases as 1.0 around the same time.

Thanks,

From a Universe perspective we'll follow Main here and once bzr is updated
all the needed rdepends should be updated too.

I checked the reverse depends, and only bzrtools and bzr-gtk have strictly versioned dependencies. Of course the other reverse dependencies still need to be tested.

bzrtools can just be synced from Debian, I'll do that.

bzr-gtk has an older version in Debian, I'll test/rebuild/update from upstream/etc. as appropriate.
