Bug Description

Binary package hint: sata-modules-2.6.28-11-generic-di

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 9.04 Release: 9.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

unable to boot. no way to get it.

3) What you expected to happen

Jaunty to boot.

4) What happened instead

SRST failed (errno=-16) repeated, then dropped into busybox. doing ls /dev/s* shows no "sda" device at all.

Motherboard is:
XFX NFORCE 680I LT SLI INTEL SOCKET 775 DDR2 Product Code: MB-N680-ILT9
Latest XFX AWARD BIOS
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/products/motherboards/6series/680.aspx

Other info attached to follow-on comments since apparently you cannot upload multiple files (at least with Firefox on Win) - I got the info from booting the live CD

Hi wcollier,

This seems related to bug 220706. Just curious if you could try some of the workarounds listed there and let us know your results:

1) "Yes. I already tried settings the rootdelay=120 and it boots after the drive has been discovered." - https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/220706/comments/51

2) "I fixed the problem by turning my drives to cable select and re-plugging my ide cables in the proper direction." - https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/220706/comments/2

3) "I turned off all my unused sata ports in BIOS, by changing 'Extended IDE Drive' to none." - https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/220706/comments/42 and https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/220706/comments/43

4) You may also want to try a BIOS update if there is one available for you system

Thanks.

#1 - rootdelay set to 120 and 300, neither changes the results.

#2 not an IDE, its a SATA HDD issue.

#3 there are no unused SATA ports. Disconnected all but the root dirve, turned off as recommended, still having the same error.

#4 Bios updated prior to my install, its the latest.

Is there a way to capture the boot messages from the failed boot? I only get as far as the busybox (initrdfs I think) load after things time out and there are no sdN devices found.

Hi wcollier,

Thanks for the quick response and sorry for such a long delay in getting back to you. Can you try one last quick test and try either the most recent 2.6.31-rc3 Mainline kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds or grab and test the latest Karmic Alpha Image which contains a 2.6.31-rc3 based Ubuntu kernel - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains I think you could mount a USB stick after you are dropped into a busybox to try and grab log files (eg. dmesg). Thanks.
