Bug Description

Hello all

I have:
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

Linux xxxxx 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:28:32 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux installed with actual updates.

I have Nvidia driver 177.82 installed.
I have configuret TwinView with first screen 1440x900
second screen 1600x1200 resolution.

Now I have observed the following behaviour.

1. First all is working fine I can open applications and terminals and documents, etc.

2. Then after a while, when the free memory of the computer (installed 4 GB) gets low (less that a 1/2 GB free) the content of fresh opened windows starts to freeze (is no more correctly displayed).

3. For a while I can resize the window a bit (make it bigger) then the content is refreshed/displayed. I can still work in the window I just don't see any updates of the window content changes.
Al the previous opened windows (programmes) are still working fine/normal, I can enter data and the changes getting displayed.

4. Then after a while, even the older opened windows getting affected and I can only reboot the computer to get ridge of this behaviours (maybe restart of the X server would do, but I just reboot).

I'm very happy how Ubuntu 64 is working, compared with Vista (have dual boot installation) it is very fast, congratulations, but this small bug really hampers me to recommend it to other in my company (I'm the first Linux Ubuntu tester in my company)

If you need further info feel free to contact me.
Would be grate if there would be a way to solve this problem.

Thanks for you effort

Greetings Chris

Which applications do you use, and which applications are using those 3500 MB of RAM?

Do you use a swap partition?

greetings

Martin

I have trayed with different once, then first I tough it has something to do with gedit, but then I tried with diffent setting, but it happens allways, so you can open programs as you like, I mostly use:
- NetBeans
- Firefox
- Thunderbird
- Opera
- DBVisulizer
- tomcat application server
- groovy
- grails
- 3 to 5 nautilus
- 3 to 5 terminals
- xpdf
- flash inside the browser
- etc.

I'm a java software developer in a Application server environment.

>Do you use a swap partition?

Yes 4 GB big, but the swap partion is hardly used at only a few MB.

I will tray to observe if it has something to do with the first few bites there are written to the swap partion.

Greetings Chris

Hello Martin

I made a second observation:

1. In the beginning all is OK but after a while when you scroll windows with the mouse wheel (mostly in internet browsers, xpdf, image viewer) it start to scramble/ mixing up the window content.

2. you can fix when you use the page down and up keys or if you refresh the content of browsers or views where possible.

I hope this info is helping you in finding the problem.

I have made few tests as long as it not start to write to the swap area the window content is not freezing. I have opened programms until 3.5GB cloded some and went one opening new once all did fine, so maybe you guess is right that the problem starts after the operating system has to write some data to the swap area.

Thanks for you help and support.

Do you use compiz as window manager? I have filled your bug under xorg-server in the absence of the current WM info.
Could you also follow the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze to improve your bug report? Thanks!
