Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

I have Pidgin set to only show an icon in the notification area if it's actually notifying me of something. This should mean that the Pidgin buddy list cannot hide (because it requires an always-there "tray icon" to unhide). Using Pidgin since the new Canonical Notification System came out, it does hide, however. And if you're using KDE the message indicator applet that exists in GNOME has no corollary, so there's no way to unhide the buddy list window.

The result is that if you have the icon set to show only for new messages or not at all and you use KDE in Jaunty, Pidgin will be running, notifications will be shown, messages will be received...and there will be no way to reach the buddy list.

Same situation in GNOME if indicator-applet is not running. This is a problem with pidgin's settings—can we somehow get old settings back? Currently I'm forced to run indicator-applet, so instead of having no unnecessary icons in the panel I have a huge applet.

Rather than forcing us to use the icon, can't it just lose the ability to hide
in situations where the icon's not there and neither is the applet?

That's what it always did—closing all windows with no tray icon caused pidgin to quit. Now it doesn't.

Ah, I thought you meant forcing the icon back into use.

I confirm this bug on Jaunty. Pidgin is not usable anymore if you don't use a tray icon because "close" is now associated with "hide in the tray" even if the tray icon option is not activated.

IMHO, it has nothing to do with the indicator applet.

The small relation to the indicator applet is that in GNOME you can unhide it
without the tray icon if you use the indicator applet. In KDE, no such thing
exists, so we're stuck.

This looks like one to address before Jaunty is released. David, would
you escalate it? Also, a comprehensive review of bugs would be useful
this week.

I believe that this is fixed by a patch that is in my PPA, could you guys please test the version of pidgin-libnotify here:

  pidgin-libnotify - 0.14-1ubuntu6~ppa3
  http://launchpad.net/~ted-gould/+archive/ppa

What this does is that it doesn't keep the buddy window open, unless the buddy window is closed by using the indicator applet.

Seems to work fine for me.
