Bug Description

Hi,

looks like Microsoft will be defaulting to mpich2 for its compute cluster. it would be great to be able to use the same package on ubuntu as well. I guess it compiles on Linux without a problem, but there is no package for it on ubuntu nor debian.

Hy all,

I'm new to contributing to ubuntu and would like to get involved. I have worked a while now with mpich (both 1 and 2), and would like to package this one.

Is there anyone willing to mentor me on this one?

I already read the packaging guide, but there are still unknown facts about the process :(

Thank you,
Marko

mpich2 is currently stalled at Debian.
Looks like it's been requested, but no maintainer has stepped forward.

I have a build in my PPA.

I'm hoping it gets into Debian before Karmic Feature Freeze, in which case we'll just sync it from debian's repository. If it does not, I'll perhaps push the latest package we can get.

The one currently in karmic -- apparently this one, builds empty lib and lib-dev versions, and mpich2 itself lacks all libraries.
It's pretty much useless for anything but running hostname on 20 machines.
The version that apparently is wending it's way through debian is the same -- I guess it's based on this one.

The version produced by the mpich guys themselves is fine -- it lacks the roccocco debian policy style guideline package splitoffs, but it's of actual use. Maybe someone should grab that one, and add empty lib, lib-dev and doc sections that can be filled in later?

Hi Alex-

Any chance you could send a patch that fixes this up?

Hi Dustin,

I'm the mpich2 maintainer in Debian.

mpich2 just went out of NEW. I'm not sure yet whether it is correct, but it at least look in a better state than the mpich2 package in Ubuntu.
Maybe it's worth taking a look, and shipping instead of the currently broken mpich2 package?

Hi Lucas-

Thanks for the note.

I would love to get Karmic's mpich2 package in sync with Debian. I just downloaded it, however, we can't satisfy the build-depends of mpich2 in karmic, though, as we don't have libg2c0.

Is this a hard dependency?

While we can probably slip a new build of mpich2 into karmic, we probably can't get a whole new libg2c0 package. This would have to wait for Lucid, I'm afraid...

This bug was fixed in the package mpich2 - 1.2-1ubuntu1

---------------
mpich2 (1.2-1ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

  * Previous Debian packaging (sync'd from Debian mentors) has been
    improved significantly, such that this library is now functional;
we should sync this from Debian; no Ubuntu specific changes here,
except to note in this changelog that we're closing LP: #30163 and
to manually force an upload; we should purely sync this package
from Debian for the next Ubuntu release
