Bug Description

When there are unread messages, the empathy notification area icon starts blinking and blinks forever until I click on it. This is annoying and obnoxious and distracts me from whatever I am doing.

When a message arrives, the icon might change to indicate me of unread messages. Additionally, an ignoreable notify bubble might appear, showing me what the message is about and from whom. Whatever you do, please do not annoy me with a blinking icon all day if while I'm trying to get stuff done :-0

If Ubuntu retains the option to have a status icon (rather than using the indicator-applet), than we should make sure it doesn't flash.

Are you all sure this is a duplicate of bug #287692 ? They seem rather different to me, did I miss anything?

Blinking is the old way of signalling new activity in IM programs in Ubuntu. The new one is using the indicator applet which pop-up an osd and a visual notification. As pidgin already has it but not empathy, we should patch empathy to support the new system in order to be able to disable blinking without regression, as the new notification system will replace it. That's why your bug is linked to that one.

Empathy is going to replace pidgin, too. The latter does not blink, unrelated to the indicator applet. These are two different bugs, really. Then this may be marked as wontfix if it's so, but it's not the same bug.

Pidgin doesn't blink because Ubuntu developers disable it for integration with the indicator applet because it was redundant...

New message blinking uses about 4% of the cpu. This is a waste of resources. If it is possible, please remove that!

Which blinking are you referring to?

This bug affects the upstream Empathy only, which uses its own notification icon. In Ubuntu the problem does not exist anymore because it has since been integrated with the indicator applet.
