Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Steps to replicate bug:
Install from alternative install CD.
Installation finishes successfully.
Boot into the new install and the Ubuntu 'loading' screen can be seen.
Gnome login screen should now be seen but instead the login drums can be heard but the screen is black.
I can log in with my details but still the screen is black.

Video card details from 8.04.1 install:

Possibly this has something to do with the development with the radeonhd driver?

I'm not sure which release as I could not see the desktop but I tried with the last two daily i386 alternative install Intrepid Ibex CD builds.

I've tried the live desktop CD since and am getting the same results as
above. I was wondering if this bug should come under the below package as
this package/driver states that it supports my hardware (2400 HD PRO) pci
card.

Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of 'lspci -vvnn'. Also, try disabling compiz (such as via chmod a-x /usr/bin/compiz) and see if that makes it start up properly.

I tried from my install and from the live CD. Note that I have had my
install running with the on board Intel graphics chip so that's why I added
the live CD results too. I disabled the on board Intel graphics from the
BIOS before rebooting to get the non-liveCD results.

I tried disabling compiz with the command you gave me below and restarting X
with a ctrl-alt-backspace with my harddisk install and the live CD but
neither managed to bring up the desktop graphics (still black).

No problem, I installed again with yesterdays daily alternative i386 build
and still got the same result. I've added the files again from this go.

Also I haven't mention before that the radeonhd driver works for my ATI card
in 8.04.1.

Forwarding this bug from a ubuntu user:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/273510

Problem:
On boot in Ubuntu, after usplash X goes to a black screen. The login sounds can be heard, and login info is accepted, so X hasn't locked up. Disabling compiz made no difference.

I can't tell for sure from the log file, but it sounds like it's maybe mapping the outputs incorrectly?

New information: I've installed the latest Intrepid build and the ati video

No compiz 'visual effects' can be enabled at the moment.

Hi Lionel, you could try booting from the latest live desktop CD and
checking if the screen driver works. If so possibly something has gone
wrong with the upgrade from 8.04. If this is the case a fresh install of
the distro could potentially fix it. I haven't been able to update to the
final release of 8.10 as I'm away from home for a while so can't tell you
how I went. Previously the screen was working with the release candidate,
but without much graphics acceleration.

Black screen with the live cd normal mode, then chose graphics safe mode - which worked fine. After installing, just a black screen when the kde login screen should appear :(

It could be, that the connector table of your card is broken. Could everyone, who gets a black screen please try to set the HDP option as described in section "10.5. My monitor isn't detected" in [1] ?
Unfortunately there are two drivers for your graphics chip, one is called radeonhd, the other one is called radeon. Please test for both drivers and report back here.
Thanks!

I had the same issue with a dell desktop machine containing an ATI rv610 graphics card. If found that I could get the xserver working by going to the console and editing the xorg.conf file to explicitly set the driver to "radeonhd" instead of the default "radeon". I do not know why the radeon driver is setting the screen into standby, the xorg logfile looks normal in both cases.

so short version, radeonhd works, radeon doesn't.

radeontool in Jaunty* can be used to assist in debugging this issue. After installing it, you run it like this:
    radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
    radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver), and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

For more info see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen

[* Note: radeontool is available in earlier versions of Ubuntu but is too old; if you need to run it on an older version of Ubuntu, you can obtain and build it from the upstream git tree at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool/]

I can switch to the console via ctrl-alt-F1 when using the radeon driver, but not when using fglrx. Looking through Xorg.0.log I can't find anything that points to a problem.
