Bug Description

I have to restart X (CTRL+ALT+BKSP) to get a projector to work with my Dell 1330 that came pre-installed with Ubuntu. I have to plug in the projector, then restart X, then re-login, then restart my presentation.

I was giving a talk at a professional conference and it was embarrassing that I had to reboot X and re-login while everyone sat there waiting for me. One judge even came up to me and said "Don't give presentations on Linux" when I was done. Great....

My Specs:
Ubuntu 8.04
Dell 1330 with integrated graphics (intel?)

I'm happy to attach any log/config files if it would be helpful.

Was Hardy a clean install or did you upgrade to it? That xorg.conf isn't a Hardy-style one. The reason the external display didn't work is likely because your xorg.conf is only configured for one display. Hardy should have by default set up one like this (see attachment) to work better for hotplugging. I have a GM965 as well, so maybe try backing up your xorg.conf and testing with the one I attached?

If it's an upgrade, it really would be nice if it gave the option of changing the config. I know the reason it's not changed is to avoid adding regressions, but sometimes changing can be good.

the laptop probably has a hotkey for trying the second output?

Timo, there is a laptop hotkey, but it doesn't work to turn on the output. The only way I can turn it on is to restart X.

Mackenzie, I have seen this problem on both a hardy clean install, and on my laptop that I bought from Dell with Ubuntu pre-installed. That said, I will try your xorg.conf file and see if it works. Thanks.

have you tried running 'xrandr --auto' on a terminal?

Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of xrandr each from two cases: a. with no external monitor detected, and b. with external monitor.
