Bug Description

hello.
sorry if this has been reported before.

ive run into some trouble with kubuntu, this being that it wont let me add a new user using the user management option under system settings.
(system settings - user management)

if i try an add a new user using terminal (eg - sudo useradd -r new user) the new user doesnt show up in the user management section of system settings, and the new user is not showing in the log in window either.

im using kubuntu (hardy, not using kde 4 on the system with this issue)
it was fine a week ago, but all of a sudden this has become an issue, i have no idea why.

i have managed to use the user management section to add a new user, but it doesnt actually create a new user (even though it says it has)

Changed in kdebase:
importance: Undecided → Medium

Thank you for taking your time to file this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Can you check whether the user is actually getting created by doing "su <username>" in a terminal? It will ask you for the user password and should change the user to the one specified in the above command.

okay, ive run the command mentioned (su username) and i get " unknown id: user name " im no expert but this says to me that the user doesnt exist :-)

ive tried creating a new user (with a different name) by going to system settings - user management and then going to administrator mode and adding a new user, but it doesnt seem to create one.

i have also tried running sudo useradd user name, and then doing su user name, this works, but the new user doesnt show up in either the user management option or the login window.

cheers

(SOLVED)

progress, it seems that for some reason using the gui to add /remove users and change groups etc isnt working for some reason, which i have yet to discover.

however if i run " sudo adduser " in a terminal and follow the instructions i can add a user (but with a limited account)
so once ive created the user i need to change the permissions, eg - make them a member of the admin group so that they can install updates etc, but again the gui will not allow me to do this (not even in administrator mode)

so what i have done, is to edit the /etc/group file to add the user to the admin group this way, which will then give them the needed access.

this is the way ive done it, and it works and hasnt caused any issues (that i have discovered as yet) so maybe some one will find this useful ?

as i said i have no idea why i wasnt able to do this using the system settings way.

Thanks for the updates, but unless you are able to do it in the GUI it's a bug, as the GUI is entitled to enable you add or remove users. We need someone else to confirm the same bug on Kubuntu 8.04 :)

Rather a kde-guidance than a kdebase issue.

Did you go into Adminstrator mode first?

I can confirm this bug: I use Kubuntu 8.04, upgraded directly from Kubuntu 6.06.2, and this is the first time I have tried to add a user via the GUI.

The GUI allows me to input all the data for a new user, and then select groups, but once I exit the GUI the user does not exist. I tried logging out/logging back in and rebooting, but no new user shows up, nor does their /home/NEWUSER directory exist.

The CLI tools work fine.

I did activate the administrator mode (which is the only way to activate the Modify/New/Delete buttons).
