Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

From wikipedia:

"The term ‘Ogg’ is commonly used to refer to audio file format Ogg Vorbis, that is, Vorbis-encoded audio in the Ogg container. Previously, the .ogg file extension was used for any content distributed within Ogg, but as of 2007, the Xiph.Org Foundation requests that .ogg be used only for Vorbis due to backwards-compatibility concerns. The Xiph.Org Foundation decided to create a new set of file extensions and media types to describe different types of content such as .oga for audio, .ogv for video (including Theora), and .ogx for applications."

thank you for your bug report. is any application using this new naming yet? that seems not really standard in behaviour and that should rather be discussed on bugzilla.gnome.org

I missed the previous question somehow. Why is it relevant that any other apps would properly save as .oga ? I don't know of the top of my head but I'll keep an eye and report back if I see others. What needs to be discussed about this ?

When inserting a CD to be "ripped" to Ogg Vorbis, use the .oga extension to create such files.

This is _totally_ broken. I have hardware that knows about .ogg but not .oga, so now when I rip songs with Linux they don't work on my music player. I am cluey enough to know that I have to rename them, but most people won't be - and will just assume that Linux doesn't work.

That would be classed as a bug with your hardware, perhaps a firmware update is required. The ogg standard now primarily uses .oga for audio, and .ogg is kept only for backwards compatibility, see http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/MIME_Types_and_File_Extensions . I too have a hardware player that recognises .ogg and not .oga, so I keep my files as .ogg as well (for now).

I believe it's more important to adhere to the standards rather than keep using .ogg indefinitely, just to keep some hardware players happy. I suspect only a fraction of users with .oga files will have .ogg hardware players, and those that do would probably be aware why an .oga file doesn't work.

This has been reverted upstream, just to let you know. They realized it was a little stupid since we don't get much advantages and break compatibility. Expecting users to update their firmwares is not an option, they won't understand the problem (sometimes it even requires Windows to do so...). Anyway now .ogg is reserved to Ogg Vorbis files, and .oga is recommended for more complex files, which (software) players will detect.

Something to keep in min when "fixing" apparently little things... that can break a whole system.

Right, more precisely it is reverted since gnome-media 2.25, which is in jaunty but not in intrepid.
Thanks.
