Driver manager tries to install unneeded FGLRX driver for Compiz

Bug Description

I have a desktop PC (not a laptop) with an ATI 9600 XT video card (AGP card).

After clean install of Hardy beta it uses by default free radeon driver and Compiz; Normal effects work ok.

But Driver Manager (jockey I think) tries to install fglrx propietary driver when I click "Extra" effects. I cancel the installation of fglrx because it's not needed: Compiz worked well enough in Gutsy with radeon driver, both normal and extra effects. So I have no Extra effects :-( .

The PC is a desktop, not a laptop, so the graphics card is not blacklisted.

To sum up, Driver Manager (jockey) should not get in the way when I click "Extra" effects: the current radeon driver can handle them as it did in Gutsy.

Details of the graphics card:

    jose@jose-desktop:~$ lspci -vnn | grep ATI
    02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc M10 NQ [Radeon Mobility 9600] [1002:4e51] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    02:00.1 Display controller [0380]: ATI Technologies Inc M10 NQ [Radeon Mobility 9600] (Secondary) [1002:4e71]

(card has VGA and DVI connectors, thus the two lines).

Attached files follow: uname-a.log, proc_version_signature.log, lspci-vvnn.log, dmesg.log, Xorg.0.log .

Also, this bug could be a duplicate of bug #207474 (though in that bug computer could be a laptop instead of a desktop).

Many thanks. If I can help testing any patch just say so.

Now using jockey-common 0.3.3-0ubuntu1, jockey-gtk 0.3.3-0ubuntu1.

I *think* that this should work, but since I do not have an ATi card myself I cannot be 100% sure, so please cry out if it does not work (I'll upload later today). I did a similar test on my nvidia card, where it worked.

jockey (0.3.3-0ubuntu2) hardy; urgency=low

  * Merge to upstream trunk to pick up a few bug fixes:
    - nvidia.py: Add AddARGBGLXVisuals option to Screen section for
      nvidia-glx. (LP: #154596)
    - nvidia.py: Do not advertise as enabling composite if driver is already
      loaded (i. e. installed manually). (LP: #202802)
    - fglrx.py: Do not suggest installing fglrx if using the radeon X.org
      driver, since that already supports composite (LP: #207957)
    - jockey/ui.py: Change --update-db to print an error message instead of
      exception (LP: #209594)

Latest jockey update did not fix this for me.

I have the same graphics card as the original reporter.

I'm sorry, it seems like I do not have the exact same graphics card. It is a Radeon 9600XT but the lspci output is different:

$ lspci | grep ATI
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600]
02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR [Radeon 9600] (Secondary)

I have also attached the output of 'lspci -vvnn'.

And this is the jockey version in use:

$ dpkg -l | grep jockey
ii jockey-common 0.3.3-0ubuntu2
ii jockey-gtk 0.3.3-0ubuntu2

Please let me know if you need any more input.

Same as Nick, problem still present with jockey 0.3.3-0ubuntu2, even after rebooting.

Attached screenshot of dialogs shown.

What happens:
    - Dialog 1 asks password for Driver Manager (type password)
    - Dialog 2 asks whether to enable propietary controller (click Cancel)
    - Dialog 3 tells to run Appearance -> Desktop Effects after rebooting,
      when new controller is active (click 'X' button in dialog's title bar)
    - 2 and 3 pop again, I do same actions, they don't reappear.

Nick, please attach you /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Are you currently using a driver other than ati/radeon?

Hi, still using jockey 0.3.3-0ubuntu2.

When I'm back home this evening I'll update my system to try the new jockey updates.

I'll provide you my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it's fairly minimal and not hand-edited by me.

No. What other driver would that be that works with Compiz and is not fglrx?

$ grep drivers /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//ati_drv.so
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so

I'm also seeing this problem, with jockey-gtk 0.3.3-0ubuntu5. See #212117 for details about my graphics card.

My xorg.conf is identical to Nick's.

(sorry for delay, Internet broke at home)

xorg.conf attached (same as Nick's, just "es" keyboard instead of "de").

Using radeon free driver:
    $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep drivers
    (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//ati_drv.so
    (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeon_drv.so

jockey-gtk, jockey-common now are 0.3.3-0ubuntu6.

jockey still asking me whether to install fglrx, see dialogs attached in a previous post.

Ah, thanks for the xorg.confs. I see the problem now. So far I was just checking for "no device section present" or "device section with ati or radeon", but not for "device section without a driver". I'll get that fixed.
