Bug Description

Both the live CD ("Try on this computer without installing anything") and an actual hard drive installation fail to bootup completely and enter x on my new ASUS F8SA-X2 laptop. The video card is an ATI Radeon HD 2600. It boots and gets past the initial ubuntu splash screen and then when it's trying to start x the screen goes blank briefly three times then just hangs. I've tried Unutunu 7.10 and the new 8.04 beta.

The screen that it hangs on and blinks at looks like this:
* Starting deffered execution scheduler atd [ OK ]
* Starting periodic command schduler crond [ OK ]
* Checking pattery state . . . [ OK ]
* Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [ OK ]
_ (blinking line)

Anyone have any thoughts? Does ubuntu just have poor ATI drivers/support seems like a lot of people are running into issues with ATI cards on laptops.

I have an almost identical problem with a desktop machine using an ATI Radeon X850. The last line I see before the screen flickers a couple of times is
* Starting periodic command scheduler crond [ OK ]

Every few times there is a solid green line on the top of the screen instead of it being completely blank.

I've tried both AMD64 and i386 versions. I have an AMD64 X2 processor

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
This bug seems related with bug 211759. Can you add your /var/log/Xorg.0.log log file ?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Hello.
I've just tried the Ubuntu 8.10 Release Candidat and the bug is still there.
After the following lines I've got several "green" screens and then nothing.
* Starting System Tools Backend s system-tools-backends [ OK ]
* Starting deffered execution scheduler atd [ OK ]
* Starting periodic command schduler crond [ OK ]
* Starting additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [ OK ]
* Checking pattery state... [ OK ]

I've got a look at the xorg.conf and I discovered it wasn't configured at all. So I configured it manually and now X is running with vesa driver. You can find Xorg.0.log in attachment. This bug already happened with Ubuntu 7.10
My computer is a ASUS X53SA with ATI Radeon HD 2600.

I do confirm the presense of this bug. I am able to reproduce it running ASUS F8SA, with ATI Radeon HD 2600 as well.

Hi !
I've just tested Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alpha 4 and the X works fine with my ATI Radeon HD 2600 and the free RadeonHD driver (but don't allow 3D hardware acceleration yet). I think the next realease of Ubuntu will be OK for RadeonHD, we just have to wait or install the alpha for the most impatients ones.
About Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), the only solution I found to get a GUI is to install the proprietary FGLRX driver (which is buggy and... proprietary). You can install it with apt or with the installer from ATI's website.
Good bye and good luck.

Please re-test with the 6.11.0 driver in Jaunty and post a fresh Xorg.0.log from that attempt. Also attach any files in your /var/log/gdm/:0.log* that have error messages. We'll need the output of `lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.txt` as well.

R600 support in -ati is pretty new and still incomplete, although by 6.12.0 should be better. -radeonhd might be a better choice for the time being.

This is not something that can be fixed for Intrepid; you'll have to just stick with -fglrx there.

Hi !
I re-test Jaunty with the updated driver (6.10.0 -> 6.11.0) and restart X. It works fine. You can find in attachment the requested logs.
Bye.

Yes, I tested as well, and - it worked. :)
There was no 3D acceleration though, but I suppose it's a matter of drivers, not packaging team.

P.S. There were some other minor problems, such as weird default font DPI and failed synaptics touchpad, but I read it was into Errata so there's no point worrying about that.

Thanks for the help!
