Bug Description

Tested the network installer for PPC from http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/hardy/main/installer-powerpc/20070308ubuntu33/images/powerpc/netboot/ on a Freescale mpc5200 based machine (EFIKA). The ethernet driver for this chip is missing from the installer, making it practically impossible. All of the necessary drivers are part of the ubuntu kernel and used properly on the installed system.

The driver itself is 'fec_mpc52xx' and depends on the following modules:
fec_mpc52xx_phy
libphy
bestcomm_fec
bestcomm_core

Please add these modules, as on the EFIKA network install is the easiest to achieve.

Hi CzP,

Does this issue still exist with the final Hardy Heron 8.04 release? The reason I ask is that is looks like the fec_mpc52xx driver is enabled:

ogasawara@yoji:~/ubuntu-hardy/debian/config$ grep -rn "CONFIG_FEC_MPC52xx=" *
powerpc/config.powerpc:62:CONFIG_FEC_MPC52xx=m
powerpc/config.powerpc-smp:58:CONFIG_FEC_MPC52xx=m

Thanks.

Yes, it exists in 8.04. The problem is, that while the necessary kernel modules are installed on the system, but they are missing from the network installer. So in practice the network installer can't reach the network.

I added the missing modules from another PPC installation to initrd.img, and suddenly the network installer worked correctly.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

It still uses a 2.6.25 kernel, and the kernel modules listed in the original report are still missing.
