Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-bin-kde4

Since an update on 18-Feb-2008 I cannot login anymore on my KDE4 session. Using a new profile doesn't help. Using both nv and nvidia drivers. Won't work either through sudo or as root.

Apparently a connection with kdeinit4 cannot be established, for what I could see by login on a raw X session (X && DISPLAY=0:0 xterm), unfortunately startkde doesn't let me pipe the output to a file. But kdeinit4_wrapper moans about "/home/USER/.kde4/socket-HOSTNAME/kdeinit4_0_0" or similar not being found (USER and HOSTNAME are my username and hostname).

All I can see is the splash screen flashing the first icon (the HDD) for 2 seconds, then KDM appears again.

Some KDE4 apps won't work on KDE3 since then as a result. KDE3 works flawlessly as usual.

I'm using Hardy. As updated as it can get at the moment, as python-apt seems to be broken and a few packages (all KDE4 unrelated) can't be updated until a fix is on the repos.

I didn't mention, I use kdm-kde4, but kdm-kde3 doesn't make any difference, or running just "X" and then "DISPLAY=0:0 /usr/lib/kde4/bin/startkde" from a pure console login.

I'm having the exact same problem (with the exception that I have an ATI graphics card and use the fglrx driver). Let me know if there's anything I can do to help... I'd really like to get back to KDE4!

Can confirm the problem

startkde: Starting up...
Fatal error: you need to have a KComponentData object before
you do anything that requires it! Examples of this are config
objects, standard directories or translations.
kdeinit4_wrapper: Warning: connect(/home/****/.kde4/socket-******/kdeinit4__0) failed: : No such file or directory

Nevertheless KDE4 starts up with blank background
after

env DISPLAY=:0.0
ksmserver &
plasma &

the standard KDE environment is working. But with restricted functionality of KDE4 APPS
(KLauncher could not be reached via D-Bus)

My problem was resolved after I deleted /etc/kde4rc.

I think this might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-default-settings/+bug/193498

I fixed this last week. It was a crack upload of kubuntu-default-settings that caused this. Just remove /etc/kde4rc if you are still experiencing this problem.
