Bug Description

Binary package hint: rsync

subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

dammit the stupid upgrade-manager window closed without ever letting me copy the full error message out of it

yes, lets pop up lots of messages that don't contain the full details and then close all the windows once the last popup (the same popups prevents us from focusing into the terminal with the error message) has been closed. (this is all the windows INCLUDING the terminal window, so guess what? No Error Message, because it closed too....)

There needs to be a general paradigm when developing the error handling, and this is an example of what not to do.

ProblemType: Package

ErrorMessage: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Hi,

bug 220645 is very similar to this. Is there any chance
that you have Debian's sysv-rc package installed?

Thanks,

Hi James,

Yep, it's definitely possible. I'm at work right now so I can't tell you for
sure, but I will definitely check on it when I get home tonight and let you
know.

Thanks!

Jody

Hi again James,

I just checked, and I do have the sysv-rc package installed. If my bug's a
duplicate, sorry about that!

Hi,
Thank you so much!
I found the bug when I upgraded from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. But now, i have to
install new ubuntu 8.04 to avoid some errors.

Hi,

You should have sysv-rc installed, the question is whether you
have Debian's installed. Could you please open a terminal and
give us the output of "apt-cache policy sysv-rc", that should
help us figure that out.

Thanks,

James

Hi machak,

You have the Debian version installed. You should check your /etc/apt/sources.list
to make sure that you don't have any Debian repositories in it. Mixing
repositories like that will lead to all sorts of trouble.

Thanks,

James

I also checked out my repositories, and there's no Debianpackages there..

Hi,

This also appears to be a Debian version of the package you have
installed. If you attach your /etc/apt/sources.list to the bug
then I can try and work out where it is coming from.

Thanks,

James

Same problem here...solved.

For those who will get trapped into same thing...

Problem was that I've added some debian repositories to my /etc/apt/sources.list which triggered debian version of sysv-rc installed

How to check:

run "sudo apt-cache policy sysv-rc"
If you see something like in the first couple of lines
Code:

sysv-rc:
Installed: 2.86.ds1-38

ie version name without "ubuntu" at the end (2.86.ds1-38 instead of 2.86.ds1-14.1ubuntu31) then you've hit same problem.

How to resolve:

1. run "sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list" and remove all non-ubuntu repositories. (you may want to make a backup copy of this file just for the case)
2. Go to /var/cache/apt/archives and delete all the files - these are files downloaded by package manager from the repositories, who knows what else was downloaded from the wrong ones.
3. Make sure that you did not pickup debian's rsync as well - remove and install rsync - run "sudo apt-get remove rsync" and then "sudo apt-get install rsync", ignore rsync error message at the end.
4. run "sudo synaptic", then navigate to "sysv-rc", select it, then go to "package" menu, click on "force version", select ubuntu version, smth. like 2.86.ds1-14.1ubuntu31 then click on "force version", then click "Apply" (big green checkmark button under the menu line ). Problem should be solved after that.

Followed the fix instructions, the problem has been resolved. rsync is installed with no more error messages. Thank you. Now I'll have to be more careful where I use my debian sources (it seemed like a great idea at the time.)

Same here. Uninstalled and reinstalled the correct package of rsync, and all
other packages were able to successfully install.
