Bug Description

Binary package hint: tzdata

The summer time dates for Brazil changed again (as it does almost every year). Upstream already has the needed changes on version 2007h.

I can confirm seeing this. It seems that the information was inserted incompletely:

$ TZ=America/Rio_de_Janeiro date
Mon Oct 15 09:29:34 BRT 2007
$ TZ=America/Sao_Paulo date
Mon Oct 15 10:29:41 BRST 2007

My feisty system currently has tzdata version 2007f-0ubuntu0.7.4

$ TZ=America/Sao_Paulo date
Mon Oct 15 09:58:47 BRT 2007

I inspected the diff between 2007f and 2007h, effective diff attached. This

 * fixes a lot of DST rules which are very important and unproblematic for upgrades
 * fixes the coordinates of some cities, which is unproblematic for upgrades, too
 * adds a new timezone America/Indiana/Tell_City, which does not affect upgrades.

No TZ removals or merges.

Thus taking the entire 2007h tarball is fine for an SRU.

langpack-locales for dapper and tzdata for edgy and feisty uploaded to and accepted in -proposed now. Please test and give feedback if it has correct values now.

Gutsy will follow soon, I want to debug and fix bug 116193 for it, too.

The Gutsy change has been uploaded to the queue, but we have to wait until the Gutsy release to accept it.

I verified that zdump -v America/Indiana/Tell_City gives different outputs before and after the update.

I have got confirmation from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/15207 that the -proposed package solves the DST issue for Brazil.

How this bug is related with this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tz-brasil/+bug/138652?

Why the package tz-brasil is necessary? The package tzdata is not enough?
If not, how the brazilian users will now that they have to install tz-brasil to keep
their time correct? Should the tz-brasil package be installed by default (like broffice.org)
when locale is pt_BR?

I Think no Marco...because some Brazilians like me use the Locale in another language. I use my Ubuntu in English, and I also learn Japanese and German. But its a good idea if the location is in Brazil....do you agree ?

Here in Brazil the president (with National Eletric System Operator orientation) sets the start and end date of DST every year. If someone tells me how I can maintain this information.

paozinho,

you are right, I agree with you. It's not the locate, but the location that matters. Thanks.
