Bug Description

Running Ubuntu (Hoary) and installed rio500 package (version 0.8.1-5). Installs fine, ran "sudo modprobe rio500" ok. But during install and "sudo dpkg-reconfigure rio500" the device does not get created. I ended up say "no" at the prompt in the configure and got prompted with what to run manually and issuing that worked fine. On a reboot the device is lost. The entry /.dev/usb/rio500 gets created fine but I don't know enough about the way /dev is populated to address :-( rio500 works great though once I manually install it.

Do you still have this problem? And if so, are you still using Hoary, or a newer version of Ubuntu?

Yes - still a problem.

The summary is that Hoary only works with 100% manual intervention.

I have a 2nd box that I've been testing Breezy Badger (5.10) and things are improved. Installing the "rio500" package (version 0.8.1-6) works great, the /dev/usb/rio500 gets created and can be used (e.g. via /usr/bin/rio_stat) without the need to modprobe, and create the device by hand. BUT on a reboot the device disappears (just like Hoary), the good news is that running "/usr/bin/rio_stat" in automatic mode does work (unlike Hoary) but I have to do this on every reboot. I've tried this with both the default "stock" 386 kernel and the 686 image.

You can test this without the need for a rio500 device, just install the package "rio500" and after install you should find /dev/usb/rio500 exists, if you reboot /dev/usb/rio500 will be missing again. There doesn't appear to be any "hotplug" detection (and I don't think there should be). Once the rio500 setup has been run, I would assume the device would always get created after a reboot BUT this is out of my area of expertise so I'm willing to accept user error if there is something else I should do.

Thanks for checking back on this issue and not forgetting about it I know you are busy.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been out of town!

I updated the bug note - copy/pasted below too.

Thanks again for looking into this,

I'll give a dapper a go, I did briefly try it on my Wife's desktop but I had some bizare problem with it not finding a repository for the rio500 - I suspect this might be something to do with the way it was upgraded from breezy to dapper.

I'll try and do a fresh install of dapper and try that, it may take me a week or so but I'll come back with a proper report.

Can you test this device on Dapper 6.06.1 and / or Edgy beta so we can
see if this problem still exists. If I recall correctly Alan Cox
submitted a few Rio 500 patches for the kernel a while back that may
have improved support for the device.

Short answer; Dapper is missing the required package (rio500) to connect to the rio so there is no way to create the device apart from by hand

Longer answer;

I just performed a fresh install of Dapper 6.06.1. The rio500 kernel module exists and a manual modprobe appears to work. But I can't find the rio500 package to actually test device connections. I've added the unofficial repositories just in case but it isn't showing up there either. I checked http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=rio500&searchon=names&subword=1&version=dapper&release=all but it looks like it isn't available under Dapper (or Edgy). It was under Breezy (which worked much better than Hoary, "dpkg-reconfigure rio500: worked in Breezy, it just didn't survive a reboot). I'll try and pull down source; either the deb source (librio500-dev) from breezy or http://sourceforge.net/projects/rio500 and see if I can do anything with that. Side note; the rioutils package is NOT appropriate

There is still an issue, I not sure though if this needs a new bug number though. More below.

> Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I just tried 8.04.1 LTS Hardy Heron and I can see the module in:
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/misc/rio500.ko

There is no usb device in /dev though, probably as the rio500 setup has not been run.

I can no longer find a rio500 package :-( Is there a rio500 package somewhere for 8.04(.1)? I tried enabling the 3rd party repository in Synaptic but I don see anything there.

Thanks for looking at this again, I would love to be able to use my Rio with a supported version of Ubuntu!

Unfortunately, according to http://packages.qa.debian.org/r/rio500/news/20050729T123432Z.html (cf. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00014.html), the package had an RC bug(s) that was not cared for. Because the source package is no longer in a supported version of Ubuntu, the maintainers can no longer care for it in a timely fashion.
