Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I've just upgraded 3 machines in the office and on each one, the panel launcher for thunderbird was broken after upgrading to gutsy. Adding another panel launcher works fine, so I assume the binary name changed or something.

Looks like it. The following panel launchers stopped working on my parents' system after the upgrade:

On two different systems that I upgraded to Gutsy from Edgy, the panel launchers weren't just broken, they were gone.

This caused some confusion for the users, as they were accustomed to using the launcher rather than the menu structure and they thought their email was "broken".

Is this symptom still reproducible in a distribution upgrade to 8.10 RC or later?

Presumably yes, unless you renamed all the executables back (which would break upgrades from 8.08 to 8.10, etc).

According to packages.ubuntu.com, the 'thunderbird' package still does not contain /usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird; neither has this been fixed in hardy; hence reopening.

A simple fix would be to ship a '/usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird' symlink that points at /usr/bin/thunderbird.

The same applies to mozilla-firefiox -> firefox. Should I file a separate bug against that package, or can this bug be marked as 'found' in it?

Sam, I think firefox has been renamed for long enough. AFAIK dapper
shipped "firefox" too.
