WORKAROUND: Run the task with 8 threads instead of 16.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

We have some more information which may help.

Once this problem happens, then the system goes into some kind of unstable state. Existing console or ssh sessions continue working as long as we don't try to access the java process. However, new SSH sessions don't start. Logging in from the console leads to the server information getting displayed but the command prompt does not show up after that.

The task that we execute on the server has a setting for number of threads to use and it is set to 16 by default which consistently leads to this bug after 24-48 hours of processing. We tried to run the same task with 8 threads and it has been running without any problem for days.

We have multiple servers with the exact same hardware and software where we are seeing this bug. We have downgraded one of them to Ubuntu 12.04.0 and that server has been working fine even with 16 threads. We have now upgraded the other servers to the new kernel released yesterday (3.13.0-27) and will report back if the issue is fixed there. If not, then we will try the latest mainline kernel.

This is not HP-specific and also happens on Dell HW. I'll take this as the tracking bug. This commit suggests that the BUG_ON is actually bogus:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip.git/commit/?id=107437febd495a50e2cd09c81bbaa84d30e57b07

In the referenced thread there was a Cc to stable@, but that apparently got dropped when the patch was put into tip. This is *not* part of 3.15 yet. Instead it's currently staged for the next merge window.

Hello Philipp, any known workarounds for this apart from reducing the load on the server? I have not yet tried the latest mainline kernel, but from your comment it sounds like it will not help.

The following might help (untested, as root):

This bug affects me as well on a supermicro system, AMD procs, Ubuntu 14.04 kernel version 3.13.0-24-generic and 3.13.0-29-generic.

I agree that it seems to be related to java, though I have not sure that limiting java procs has any impact.

We've also encountered the same bug on a Dell T620 PowerEdge server. The system would become unresponsive after a day of heavy load.

The server hasn't crashed for the past three days since running 'echo never > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled' as suggested by Phillipp in #8.

We have not yet been able to try the workaround since we decided to downgrade the servers to 12.04.0 which is taking all our time due to the number of servers involved. I will try the workaround on a test server with the same config and report back by the end of this week.

The commit removing the BUG_ON landed upstream in 3.16 (linus/master).

commit 107437febd495a50e2cd09c81bbaa84d30e57b07
Author: Rik van Riel <email address hidden>
Date: Tue Apr 29 15:36:15 2014 -0400

    mm/numa: Remove BUG_ON() in __handle_mm_fault()

Changing PTEs and PMDs to pte_numa & pmd_numa is done with the
mmap_sem held for reading, which means a pmd can be instantiated
and turned into a numa one while __handle_mm_fault() is examining
    the value of old_pmd.

If that happens, __handle_mm_fault() should just return and let
the page fault retry, instead of throwing an oops. This is
handled by the test for pmd_trans_huge(*pmd) below.

Not sure if this information is still relevant, but the server has been stable for three days now with the workaround "echo never > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled"

Is a fix going to be available for Trusty 64 bit anytime soon too?

We are also affected (DELL R620, Ubuntu 12.04, 3.13.0-29-generic). Is this bug really fixed in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.13.0-30.54 (couldn't find the related line in the changelog)?

The workaround does not work for my server (SuperMicro, 16 Core Opteron, 128GB RAM). I installed the mainline Kernel 3.15 (latest), but this doesn't help either. A fix for Trusty would be great....

The fix will appear in Trusty 3.13.0-31.55 (which is not due out for a couple of weeks yet).

Thank you, I just downloaded the current "nightly" build of the kernel + headers and installed this on my server.

According to the changelog this bugfix should've made it into it, so I guess this is better than waiting for a couple of weeks till the fix will finally land in stable, since I got to run a lot of jobs on this machine during the next weeks and require it to run stable .

Well, it did not make it into it, but 3.15.5 will fix this:

=> Wait for the 3.15.5 Kernel.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-trusty' to 'verification-done-trusty'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
