either --force-yes or --allow-unauthenticated is needed if building against 'un-official' packages.

Just a "me too":
I've just encountered that problem in feisty. Adding --force-yes to the gdebi call in pbuilder-satisfydepends-gdebi fixed it. I'm afraid that's not a good overall solution since many people don't want to use unsigned packages.

Please merge pbuilder 0.177 from Debian unstable into Hardy (main):

The debdiff includes 3 bug fixes for Ubuntu, which I'll submit to Debian, if they get accepted/are ok:
  * pbuilderrc: use "sudo -E" for PBUILDERROOTCMD (LP: #175776)
  * debian/control: Recommend gdebi-core for pbuilder (LP: #131153)
  * pbuilder-satisfydepends-gdebi: add "--force-yes" to apt-get call
    (LP: #123068)
  * pdebuild: Move "$@" to end of "arg chain" for PDEBUILD_BUILDER
    calls, so that "--buildresult" option gets passed to pbuilder
    (LP: #129586)

Changelog since last Ubuntu version:
pbuilder (0.177) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Loic Minier ]
  * Run apt-get autoremove after upgrade.

  [ Junichi Uekawa ]
  * python-apt/gdebi based pbuilder-satisfydepends-gdebi (closes:
    #453388)
  * Fix devpts mount permissions (closes: #453862)
  * Document pbuilder-satisfydepends-gebi in manpage

Please make gdebi a suggests, not a recommends. Debian install recommends by default and Ubuntu does too with aptitude and pbuilder works just fine with no gdebi at all.

Thanks for the debdiff.

Because we are in upstream version freeze I cherry picked the fixes (thanks Daniel!) and uploaded a new 0.176ubuntu2 with it.

However I think we should aim for 0.178 for hardy (via freeze exception) as it contains fixes that look useful. The updated debdiff may server as a basis. But it needs work, when I tested it pbuilder-satisfydepends-gebi did no longer work, I haven't investigated further.

Cheers,
 Michael
