@ LGB etc: My system also will not work without KMS. In fact, the 2.6.34 rc3 kernel with modeset=0 will not complete boot either. One peculiarity on my system with kernel 2.6.32-21 is that setting modeset=1 via /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf does not work.

However, placing i915.modeset=1 on the boot line in grub does work. Go figure - as devs have commented this is a highly contextual bug.
