I have similar problems too. The computer is Dell Optiplex GX 260. I have disabled compiz, power saving options and updated BIOS to latest version A09.

I have modified xorg.conf file - added AccelMethod "uxa", put only one resultion in screen section, disabled all the modules in section Modules.
