yes I did

./configure --prefix=/usr

but I also had the package from distribution, so I think I ended up with 2x copies of rdesktop???
anyway, compiling with

./configure --prefix=/usr

*AND*
the symbolic link

sudo ln -s /usr/share/rdesktop/ /usr/local/share/rdesktop

seems to work well!
