Installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic fixed the high pitched problem. But If I set the Profile to 5.1 there is no sound coming from either centre channel or boss.
Didn't have any problem like this with jaunty.
I am sorry, what the f**k is going on in there? does anyone even test this OS before releasing it? every time I install new ubuntu version there is something wrong with it. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186
I will try opensuse as soon as it comes out but I don't think it would be any better.

ATI 3650 HD using fglrx driver
Creative surround 5.1 speakers
