No, at the moment I have no idea, but if you like, we can try to investigate.

What Ubuntu version do you have? (I use 10.04)
What sound card? (I have SB Live Value)

Can you attach?
1. The output of "aplay -L " and "aplay -l" (this is a lower case L)
2. A pulseaudio log (when trying the workaround). This can be done as follows (in a terminal):
   a) echo autospawn = no > ~/.pulse/client.conf
   b) killall pulseaudio
   c) pulseaudio -vvvv > pulselog.txt 2>&1
3. Your default.pa, and any other pulse files, you may have tampered with.
4. The output of top, when your CPU's are at 100%

I will browse through them and see what I can do.
