The workaround described by Pebas seems to work for me as well. 5.1 works and I don't hear any strange noises. Only thing is that Banshee now fails to play some songs and hogs the CPU... However, Amarok seems to work fine so I can't tell whether this is really related to the workaround. I've got a Creative SB Audigy LS (CA0106).
