There appear to be lots of different mixer configurations involved. For those of you who have had success with slightly adjusting the mixer controls using alsamixer, please attach *clearly labeled* files for these two conditions:

1. amixer from after adjusting controls so that the distortion is gone
2. amixer from after using the volume controls in Sound Preferences so that the distortion appears again
