Same issue occurs in Ubuntu 11.04, LibreOffice Calc, not in Excel Viewer.

clicked File -> Save As -> File type: triangle -> Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls) -> Save button -> opened Firefox & downloaded Excel Viewer via:
