It seems patching with xgamma and gnome-screensaver is indeed a workaround for a problem in the ATI driver. This is what I conclude after reading more bug reports. I cannot be sure as I do not experience this bug #546578. I do know from experience that it is not a workaround for the NVIDIA driver bug #573101, which appears after user logout with multiple users on the system (as described above).
