Having investigated a little I am quite surprised that a kernel update is sent out with a serious flaw as a failure of the mouse.
The bug was known in kernel 2.6.38.8 and reappeared in 2.6.39.1

I experimented a little more:

Attaching an Apple Mighty Mouse works fine. A /dev/input/eventX is generated that connects to the /dev/input/mouseY.
Attaching an Apple Magic Mouse does not create the event device. The mouse device is created but there is no input stream.

The problem occurs regularly (Ubuntu 9.04, January 2010, now).

Hope this gets fixed soon
