try this:
1) startup pc, at grub menu choose recovery kernel mode
2) at console menu (that with red backgroud) choose "resume normal"
3) login at console with your account
4) in console sudo service gdm start
5) do login in gnome
7) now try to shutdown or reboot from menu

let me know....this work for me, but annoying :(
