Sorry for the delay in testing this new kernel. Here are the results (not good).

I tried three times with this kernel. Each time I got behavior A (fans spin up, system unresponsive). This system is so erratic that at some point I powered off completely, then back on, and still got the same behavior.

But still, results with the latest test kernel are not encouraging.

Thanks for all your help on this one, let me know if there's something else we can try.
