Thanks so much for looking into this.

I tried the mainline kernels as suggested. I tried these two:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-image-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201101261132_i386.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/linux-image-2.6.38-997-generic_2.6.38-997.201101270909_i386.deb

Both of these exhibit the same problem.

I'm removing the needs-upstream-testing tag as indicated and await further information on this report.
