Update: The problem was fixed (for me) by building and installing an upstream kernel.
I followed the directions on this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild to build and install an upstream kernel. So now I have this: 2.6.37-rc8-custom #1 SMP Sat Jan 1 13:35:39 EST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Now I can leave the lid on my laptop closed for any length of time and when I open the lid the display comes back.
