Same or similar panic happens on Linux VPCCW1FFXL 2.6.37-11-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 21 23:42:56 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux when booting normally.
To work around this I can go in recovery and use "root prompt with networking" and then issue "gdm" at the root prompt, using this I can get an usable desktop and no kernel panic.
