Like Berend, I have hit this problem setting up my cp210x based-LCD display with the SureElec driver in lcdproc. Exact same problem that is described for this bug: a call to open in the LCD driver that never returns. The workaround mentioned doesn't work for me.
I have found as an odd workaround though that if I run "screen /dev/ttyUSB0" and then kill screen (this only appears to work if I kill it, not if I close it nicely) I can then use /dev/ttyUSB0 properly.
