Hmm wireless it's possible.

I tried ctrl-alt-f1 and then did:

ifconfig wlan0 down

and it rewarded me with:

phy0->rt2x00pci_regbusy_read: Error - Indirect register access failed: offset=0x00007010, value=0xffffffff

and then hung solid a few seconds later
