I think I have a variation of this bug.
On Ubuntu 11.04 i386 32bit, I am able to boot, but then after the Grub menu, I get vertical lines and unreadable text.
I can get a normal text display by changing the video mode at the Grub menu to TEXT.
The display if OK until after the Grub menu when going to the CLI. X is not installed.
It appears that Ubuntu can't figure out the right grahphics mode. The hwinfo --framebuffer command does not report any results.
The PC is an Optiplex GX150.
